Almost every building job involving wood needs both a carpenter and a joiner. They are not rivals or alternatives. They are two halves of the same craft that separated centuries ago for practical reasons, and they still work in sequence on most projects, often without the homeowner ever noticing the handover.

Understanding where one ends and the other begins is genuinely useful, not because you need to pick a side, but because it explains why your project has quiet weeks, why some work happens off site, and why a job that looks finished still has three weeks to run.

Over 20 years of working across Jersey, from single door replacements to full commercial fit-outs, the same pattern repeats. The carpentry sets the stage. The joinery is what you actually see and touch afterwards.

Where the split came from

The names tell you almost everything.

Joinery is named after joints. The craft grew out of making things that hold together through the way the timber itself is cut and fitted, using mortise and tenon, dovetails, dowels and housings. It needed a bench, controlled conditions, and time. So it happened in a workshop.

Carpentry comes from an older word for a wagon maker, and it has always been about structure. The carpenter’s job was to get large timbers into position and hold them there. That meant working where the building was, in whatever weather, with tools you could carry.

Once workshops and machinery arrived, the split hardened. One trade stayed indoors making components. The other stayed on site fixing them into buildings. Both still meet on every job.

Same apprenticeship, different specialism

This surprises people. Carpenters and joiners usually train through the same qualification, a City and Guilds or NVQ in Carpentry and Joinery, then diverge at Level 2 or 3 into a specialism.

That shared foundation is why so many tradespeople can do both competently, and why the labels get used loosely. It also means the qualification certificate alone tells you very little. What matters is what someone does week to week, and whether they have a workshop behind them.

The tools tell the story

If you want a quick read on which trade someone practises, look at what they own.

A joiner’s workshop contains:

  • A panel saw for cutting sheet materials accurately and squarely
  • A planer and thicknesser for bringing rough timber to exact dimensions
  • A spindle moulder, which is what allows an old skirting profile to be copied exactly
  • A mortiser and bandsaw for cutting joints
  • Clamps in quantity, because glued joints need pressure while they cure
  • A spray booth for finishing, with extraction and controlled temperature

A carpenter’s van contains:

  • Circular saw, chop saw and reciprocating saw
  • Nail gun and impact driver
  • Levels, laser level and squares
  • Chisels and hand planes
  • Ladders, props and lifting gear

The distinction is not about quality of tools. It is about whether the machine can be carried. Fixed machinery means work has to come to the workshop. Portable tools mean the worker goes to the timber.

That single fact explains most of the differences that follow, including cost, timescale and finish quality.

Tolerances: where the trades genuinely differ

This is the difference that matters most and gets discussed least.

Carpentry works to millimetres. A floor joist a millimetre out is fine. Nobody will ever see it, and the structure does not care. Speed and strength matter more than fineness.

Joinery works to fractions of a millimetre. A cabinet door with a 2mm inconsistency in the gap around it looks wrong immediately, even to people who could not tell you why. A drawer front sitting 1mm proud of its neighbour catches the light and draws the eye.

This is why joinery happens in a workshop. You cannot hold those tolerances on a dusty landing with the material propped on a couple of trestles. It is also why joinery costs more per day. You are paying for setup, machine time and the slow, careful part of the process that happens before anyone arrives at your house.

A renovation, stage by stage

Here is where each trade actually appears as a project moves from bare structure to finished room.

The stage that catches people out is the one where nothing appears to be happening. After first fix and before installation, your house looks untouched for weeks. That is workshop time, and it is where the quality of the finished result is actually decided.

There is a sequencing reason for it, too. Joinery cannot be measured accurately until the framing and plasterboard are complete, because the finished internal dimensions always differ from the drawing by a few millimetres in every direction.

What goes wrong at the handover

Splitting a project between two separate companies is where most problems start.

Picture a media wall. A carpenter frames the structure and boards it. A joiner then makes cabinetry to sit within it. If those are two different firms, the joiner is measuring against work they did not build and cannot control. Any inconsistency in the framing becomes their problem to absorb, and if the finished panels do not sit flush, you have two contractors each pointing at the other.

The same pattern appears in loft conversions, kitchens, extensions and bar fit-outs.

Splitting the trades is usually fine when:

  • The two stages are genuinely separate, with weeks or months between them
  • The joinery is freestanding rather than fitted into a framework
  • You are project managing and happy to own the coordination

It causes problems when:

  • Made items have to sit inside built structure
  • Timescales are tight and one trade waits on another
  • The finished work has to line up visually with existing features

This is the practical reason most established firms cover both. One survey, one sequence, one party responsible when something needs adjusting.

One misconception worth correcting: MDF is not the cheap option and solid timber is not automatically the premium one. A painted cabinet door is usually better made from MDF, because solid timber expands and contracts with humidity and will eventually show hairline cracks along the joints. The right material follows the job, not the price list.

The Jersey factor

Working on the island adds a layer that neither trade can ignore, and it changes how the two hand over to each other.

Granite is everywhere. Cottages, farmhouses, converted outbuildings and older townhouses share the same set of conditions, and they consistently pull work back and forth between the trades.

  • Walls that lean or bow. A rigid unit pressed against a curved granite wall will rock or leave a wedge-shaped gap that trim cannot disguise. The joinery answer is scribing, cutting the edge to follow the wall’s real profile.
  • Floors that fall. A noticeable slope across a room shows as a tilted worktop unless each carcass is levelled independently and the difference is absorbed in the plinth.
  • Reveals that change depth. Thick rubble walls mean a window reveal can vary along its length, so a shelf or window seat has to be cut to follow it rather than to a single measurement.
  • Salt air and humidity. Coastal conditions are harder on timber and coatings than an inland site, which makes moisture-resistant materials and fully sealed edges a practical requirement.

The sequencing point matters more here than on the mainland. In older island properties, joinery work uncovers carpentry work regularly. Lift a rotten window sill and there may be a lintel needing attention. A team covering both trades carries on. A specialist in one has to stop and find you someone else.

What pushes any timber job up: sprayed or hand-polished finishes, solid timber over sheet materials, curves and angles, matching existing profiles that need custom cutters ground, difficult access, and working around occupied rooms.

What brings it down: simpler door styles, standard depths where the space allows, grouping several rooms into one job so setup and delivery are shared, and flexibility on timing.

Three projects and how the trades divided

Composite examples of the work that comes up most often.

A loft conversion with eaves storage. Carpentry led: a new floor structure sized for habitable loads, dormer framing, and a stud partition to form the room. The low eaves cupboards could not be measured until framing and plasterboard were finished, because the real dimensions differed from the drawing. Doors and drawer fronts were then made and sprayed in the workshop and installed on a later visit. Same team throughout, so the storage was designed with the framing already in mind rather than squeezed in afterwards.

A kitchen in a granite cottage. Thick rubble walls with reveals varying by nearly 40mm along a single run, and a floor falling towards an old external door. Carpentry first to level the subfloor and frame a false wall hiding new services. Then each base unit was levelled independently in the workshop-made run, and the plinth cut to follow the floor line, so the worktop reads dead level while the plinth absorbs the fall.

A bar counter refit. The base was framed on site to fix down and take the load, which is carpentry. The curved front panelling, counter top and back bar shelving were built and sprayed off site, which is joinery, so the venue lost as little trading time as possible. The install ran overnight with touch-ups completed before opening.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to hire a carpenter and a joiner separately?

Rarely. Most jobs are better handled by one team covering both, because the joinery has to be measured against the carpentry. Separate hires make sense only where the two stages are genuinely independent.

Why does my project have weeks where nothing seems to happen?

That is workshop time. After first fix, the made items are being cut, assembled and finished off site. It is the stage where the visible quality of the result is decided, and it cannot be rushed without showing in the finish.

Is one trade more skilled than the other?

No, the skills are different. Carpentry demands structural judgement, speed and accuracy under site conditions. Joinery demands precision and patience to much finer tolerances. Neither transfers automatically to the other.

Can a carpenter build fitted wardrobes on site?

Many can, and the result can be perfectly serviceable. What you will not get without a workshop and spray booth is a sprayed finish, fine joints, or panels scribed to follow a bowed wall.

What should I ask before hiring?

Whether they will measure in person before quoting, whether the units are made for your room or standard sizes with fillers, where the finishing is done, and whether you will see drawings to approve before anything is cut. Also confirm they carry public liability insurance and ask what guarantee covers the workmanship.

Does older property change which trade I need?

It usually means you need both, and often in an order nobody predicted. Joinery work in granite buildings uncovers structural issues often enough that it is worth asking up front what happens if something turns up behind the plaster.
